RC Car Tips # 83 Newsletter

This month was a lot of fun for me. I saw a 4 year old and 11 year old girl play and race rc cars. As well as two young brothers. Let's make the hobby popular among kids like it was 20 years ago.

Tamiya Asia Cup 2012 Korea

The TAC 2012 finals was in Korea. It was held in the same area as the Seoul Auto Saloon 2012 show.

Drivers from Asia gathered in Korea to race 1) Jr. Stock buggies, 2) Super Stock TT01, 3) M-chassis, 4) FF03, 5) F104 and 6) GT Tamiya rc cars. Photo credit: RCKorea

Tamiya Asia cup 2012 Korea Track

The track is carpet. Background are spectators and the Korea Auto Show 2012.

Korea Auto Show Green BMW

Nice car! I'm green with envy.

Korea Auto Show Grey Pink

Grey and pink alway make a good color combination. She looks like a mannequin.

Seoul Auto Salon 2012 Drift Car

I love drift cars. Wonder why.

Ohhh and now back to the Tamiya Asia Cup. Here is a video.

Thanks to Jun Soriano for the pictures.

1/12 Scale World Championship

This was the most exciting 1/12 world championship I've seen. The past two events were dominated by Naoto Matsukura. But this year it would go down to a deciding third A-main. Would the young 20 year old be able to do 3 in a row and tie his mentor, the great Masami Hirosaka? Here is a video of A-main #2, the most exciting one in my opinion.

Final Overall Result
1. Naoto Matsukura (JP) – Yokomo – 19 pts
2. Andy Moore (GB) – CRC – 19
3. Ronald Völker (DE) – Associated – 17
4. Marc Rheinard (DE) – CRC – 15
5. Rick Hohwart (US) – Associated – 13
6. Simo Ahoniemi (FI) – CRC – 13
7. Alexander Hagberg (SE) – Xray – 11
8. Jilles Groskamp (NL) – Onpoint – 11
9. Elliot Harper (GB) – CRC – 10
10. Hideo Kitazawa (JP) – Corally – 6

And interesting to see magnets instead of springs for suspension.

21.5T Brushless Motors

I've gotten requests if we could run 21.5T brushless motors in our F1 club races instead of the 540 silvercan. Here is a comparison chart that I compiled to help me make a decision.

21.5T Brushless Motors Comparison

There is a wide variance in performance among brands. So far the Revtech 21.5T ROAR spec looks powerful on paper. I've also heard good feedback on the Thunder Power.

And some models and pricing on the "stock, no-boost" electronic speed controls for these motors.

Novak GTB 2 Racing Brushless Electronic Speed Control w/X-Drive  ($114)
KO Propo BLZ-350 Programmable Brushless ESC  ($102)
Speed Passion Cirtix Series "Stock Club Race" Sensored  ($69)
Speed Passion GT2.1 Pro Stock Brushless ESC  ($124)
LRP "SPX Zero" Brushless Competition Stock Spec Speed Control  ($144)
Tekin RS Sensored Brushed/Brushless ESC  ($174)
HobbyWing Justock 45A Brushless  ($61)

F1 RC Car Racing

Despite a typhoon, 20 racers showed up on a Sunday afternoon for our own version of the German Grand Prix. It was the closest racing so far with Top Qualifier determined by only 2/100ths of a second.

But what impressed me more was when two young brothers showed up with matching aluminum carrying cases. Inside were their Tamiya F1 cars.
